Construction
Timber, copper, glass. A building needs no more.
The structure is solid timber, not as cladding, but as construction. In the penthouse this is immediately visible: walls and ceiling meet in a continuous curve and the material stays raw and exposed. No plasterboard, no wallpaper, no intermediate layer covering anything up.
Timber behaves differently from concrete. It buffers humidity, it smells, it sounds different when you knock on it. On stays of several months that is not an aesthetic argument but a climatic one, the rooms do not feel like a container in high summer.
Above it sits the copper barrel vault. It is the reason for the name and, from the street, the only part of the building you recognise from any direction.
Access
Lift to the top floor.
Every floor is reachable by lift and the entrance from the street is step-free. Anyone arriving with a suitcase and a toolbox at the same time understands immediately why that is not a detail.
Parking
One lockable space per apartment.
Not a space somewhere in the garage, but an assigned, lockable one in the underground car park. In a pedestrian zone, that is the real currency.
Laundry
Laundry room, free of charge.
Washing machines and electric dryers are available to all residents at no extra cost. Some units also have their own machine. With workwear on a weekly cycle that is a genuine cost we choose not to pass on.
The address
In the middle of the pedestrian zone. That is rare.
Gotthardstraße is Merseburg’s main shopping street and a pedestrian zone: paved, lit at night, with no through traffic. It connects the Gotthardteich pond in the west with the sequence of squares: Entenplan, Grüner Markt and Marktplatz, in the east.
From the building it is roughly 160 metres to the Merseburg/Zentrum tram stop and about 340 metres to the main station. The weekly market at Entenplan is four minutes on foot and runs on Tuesday and Thursday mornings. Bakery, chemist, pharmacy and bank are on the same street.
One thing is honestly missing: a large supermarket within walking distance. The full-range stores are a few minutes away by car or bike. If you like, we will leave a welcome basket with the essentials on arrival, so nobody has to go out again on their first evening.
